As the weather warms up and we leave the cold, dry winter behind, our skin can suffer from the transition.
Dryness, flakiness, and dullness are all common skin concerns that we may face as we move into spring and summer.
However, with some simple changes to our skincare routine, we can help our skin adjust and thrive during the warmer months.
Hydration
Hydration is a key factor in maintaining healthy skin all year round, but especially as we transition from winter to spring and summer. During the colder months, the dry air can leave our skin feeling tight, flaky, and dehydrated. However, as the weather starts to warm up, we can still experience skin dryness due to factors such as increased sun exposure, sweating, and air conditioning.
One of the simplest ways to boost hydration is by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This helps to keep the skin moisturised from the inside out, as well as flushing out toxins and promoting overall health. Additionally, incorporating hydrating skincare products into our routine can help to restore moisture and soothe dry skin.
Ingredients such as shea butter, calendula, and chamomile are especially beneficial for hydrating and restoring the skin as we enter spring and summer. Shea butter is a natural emollient that helps to lock in moisture and protect the skin's natural barrier. Calendula and chamomile are known for their anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making them great for calming irritated or sensitive skin. These ingredients can be found in various skincare products, including our Botanical Calendula & Chamomile Calm Skin Balm.
Incorporating a hydrating face mask or serum can also help to rejuvenate and restore the skin. Consider incorporating ingredients like jojoba oil and avocado oil (found in our Forever Young Facial Serum). These oils are rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, which help to nourish and protect the skin.
By prioritising hydration and incorporating nourishing ingredients into our skincare routine, we can help our skin feel soft, supple, and glowing all year round. So, as we bid farewell to winter and welcome the warmth of spring and summer, remember to take care of your skin with plenty of hydration and restorative ingredients.
Exfoliation
Another key step in preparing our skin for spring is exfoliation. Gently removing dead skin cells can help reveal brighter, smoother skin and improve the effectiveness of the products we use.
Using a physical exfoliant, such as a gentle scrub, can help to effectively remove dead skin cells and improve the texture of the skin. Look for products that contain natural exfoliants such as Pacific sea salt, which helps to remove impurities and unclog pores, and rosemary extract, which has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the skin.
Our Summer Citrus Body Salt Scrub is a great option for a full-body exfoliation experience. Enriched with the refreshing aromas of grapefruit and orange, it's suitable for all skin types and helps to stimulate circulation while nourishing new skin cells. Use it once or twice a week to maintain soft and smooth skin all season long.
For extra long-lasting soft skin, finish off your exfoliating bathing experience with a body oil to lock in hydration. Something like our Citrus & Lemongrass Botanical Body Oil, which is packed with hydrating oils, is the perfect bright and uplifting scent for the warmer weather.
Sun Protection
As we bask in the warmth of the sun, it's easy to forget the potential harm it can cause to our skin. Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature ageing and can even lead to skin cancer. That's why applying sunscreen every day is crucial for maintaining healthy skin, no matter the weather.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Broad-spectrum means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which are both harmful to the skin. UVB rays can cause sunburns, while UVA rays can penetrate deeper into the skin, causing damage that can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer.
But sunscreen isn't the only way to protect your skin from the sun. Wearing protective clothing, like hats and long sleeves, and seeking shade during peak sun hours (typically between 10 am and 4 pm) can also help reduce the risk of sun damage.
In addition to sunscreen, incorporating products with natural sun-protecting ingredients can also boost your skin's defence against the sun. For example, ZINC is an all-natural mineral ingredient that is known to create a sun-blocking barrier on the skin to help with protection against long-ray UVA and UVB radiation. We have added non-nano ZINC to our Natural ZINC Lip Balm to help with protection from the sun and exposure to the elements.
So, while we enjoy the beautiful sunny days of spring and summer, let's not forget the importance of sun protection for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are essential for maintaining healthy skin. They help protect against damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can harm our skin cells and accelerate the ageing process. One powerful antioxidant to look for is vitamin C, which is known for its ability to brighten and even out skin tone, as well as its collagen-boosting properties. Rosehips are incredibly high in vitamin C, which is why we have included them in so many of our products such as our Evening Rose Facial Cream and Radiant Glow Facial Serum.
Another ingredient that can provide antioxidant benefits is green tea extract. This ingredient is packed with polyphenols, which are antioxidants that help protect against UV damage and reduce inflammation in the skin. In addition, green tea extract has been shown to have anti-aging benefits and may even help prevent the formation of wrinkles. You can find this ingredient in our Kelp & Green Tea Mud Mask.
By incorporating antioxidant-rich products into your skincare routine, you can give your skin an extra boost of protection and nourishment, helping to keep it healthy and glowing as we transition into the warmer months.
In closing…
Taking care of our skin is a year-round commitment, and as we transition from winter to spring, it's important to adjust our skincare routine accordingly.
Prioritising hydration, exfoliation, sun protection, and antioxidants can help our skin thrive in the warmer months ahead.
By showing our skin the love and care it deserves, we can achieve a healthy and radiant glow all year round.
So let's embrace the change of seasons and give our skin the TLC it needs to look and feel its best.
